T1D is an autoimmune disease that can affect anyone. Its onset has nothing to do with one's diet or lifestyle and is thought to be caused by ones genetics and environmental factors. It occurs when one's immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas called beta cells. These cells are the ones that produce insulin. The insulin is what is needed for the body to convert blood sugar to glycogen so that your body can use it. Currently, there is no cure for T1D.
The JDRF's main priority in their research activities is to find a cure for T1D. In order to cure T1D two factors of the condition must be corrected. First, the immune system must be treated to stop attacking the insulin producing Beta cells. Secondly, new Beta cells would have to be either created to transplanted in order for the body to naturally begin producing insulin again.
Other focuses of the JDRF's research are to help treat and prevent diabetes. An example of some of their leaps forward in helping those that current have T1D is the "Artificial Pancreas Project". This project has successfully developed an insulin pump that acts as an external pancreas dispensing insulin to the wearer as needed. Sam utilizes this technology every day and it is a huge part of how he keeps his blood sugar levels in check! Check out the video below to learn more about this tool:
We hope that our efforts will help support research towards both finding a cure for T1D and to make the lives of those living with T1D easier. We also hope to raise awareness about the disease to make people more aware of what it is and how it effects people.
